LO1; Understanding the news industry report **

It is beneficial using different platforms or news distribution because you get a wide range of stories about the same subject. It is good reading news on the web because you can comment on it and read what other people have said about it so is an advantage to the audience. The TV is useful to the audience because you can listen to how he news presenters are presenting he news to see how they represent different people and call tell if they say something about someone in a jokingly manner but if you were to read it online you might know it was a joke. All different news websites etc. cover a range of news and focus on what their target audience would like so ok magazine for example focus on gossip as their mode of address is peer to peer they use informal language.

News agencies were created with a single aim to enrich the newspapers with a wide variety of news events happening around the world. Initially the agencies were meant to provide the news items only to the newspapers but with the passage of time, the rapidly developing modern mediums such as the radio, television and Internet too adapted the services of news agencies too. News agencies are important as they provide the news to other newspapers but they put it in other words, so the just get the basics this is why some newspapers tells the story differently depending on the target audience of their readers.

Web 2.0 provides media market for news providers as we have social media to read the news on for example if You follow news providers on twitter like bbc news then you get updates on their as well as the tv etc. Social media provides an easier way for the younger generation to access the news as they are usually always on social media platforms. Snapchat has news stories for their target audience to access like the Daily Mail will show usually celebrity gossip and sometimes quizzes on their etc. to appeal to their teenage audience but also educate them on some global news too but using formal mode of address.

Conglomerate news companies such as News Corp own publications include The Sun, the Wall Street Journal, Times Newspapers Ltd. The Sunday Times, The Times, US newspapers The New York Post and many more they own loads of smaller companies and can also distribute news towards them too so the news throughout them are very similar. Independent news companies such as The Independent which is a British newspaper, the independent newspaper group cover a wide range of news which show different sides of political bias as some stories in their can be left or right wing.

Citizen journalism has affected the media market for the news because now they can collect, dissemination, and analysis of news and information and they usually say it how it is. It’s their own opinion and is usually informal. We get comments on news websites which provide different views of the news stories and we get social media comments this is very useful as it provides news for other people who don’t want to read the news as they could find it biased.

These false assumptions by journalists, help create the political bias news consumers often detect in news reporting, some papers are more biased than others depending on their target audience this helps provide different stories of the news and how they get portrayed.

A story from the Telegraph States that ‘Gregg Philips was able to vote in 3 states so therefore Trump says that 3 to 5 million immigrants voted illegally’. Both news platforms the telegraph and the daily mail show a photograph of the man who was registered to vote in 3 states. The Daily Mail states in the headline that therefore a lot of the immigrants voted illegally so makes him look bad and expand on the story but the telegraph just state how Gregg could have 3 votes. It doesn’t show this article much on the radio or news24 as there were others like the supreme court one what was more important than this one. Tweets via twitter shows evidence of the illegal votes on social media platforms from Gregg Phillips. They present the story online because people can see it but there is no hard evidence in front of them this is why news providers are telling it differently. A video on the guardian which shows White House confirms Trump’s baseless belief in widespread ‘voter fraud’ he fraud in the illegal votes. Even Phillips himself is now backing off the original 3 million numbers that sparked the president’s demand for an investigation, explaining that he needs more time before he’s willing to provide final numbers or release his raw data.

The gatekeeper who is also usually the editor or the magazine decides what gets distributed onto the news, if its sensitive news then they need to portray it is as that to the media, they can edit it in a way that they think is suitable for their audience. Independent companies need to have protective coverage in case something goes wrong, as they don’t have insurance above them as good as the conglomerate companies because they can afford It if something goes wrong.

Web 2.0- news platforms use social media platforms to make their news more widespread, that means they get a higher readership figure. They use snapchat stories like the daily mail and buzz feed which have very different news stories on, they also use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for live updates. This is good because you get updated straight away however with a newspaper you will get the news later as it is already being published so the news would be on the newspaper the next day.

Radio platforms provide news for example the BBC radios all feature different local news on like if you’re on bbc radio Sheffield for example and cover music too. BBC Radio 4 have a wide variety of spoken-word programs including news, drama, comedy, science and history also BBC1 does too with special guests ranging from DJS to actors. BBC Radio 5 Live is the BBC's national radio service that specializes in live BBC News, phone-ins, interviews and sports commentaries. However, BBC Radio 1 and 2 mostly focus on music so the BBC have a range of channels to suit everyone.

Print media like the news is still in existence for many reasons for example the people who can’t or don’t want to access the internet to be able to access the news from going to their local shop and buying a newspaper depending on what type of news they want to receive. Also a lot of people like having the news to read print based because it tends to be more reliable having it in your hands in front of you instead of behind a screen. The final of many reasons why print news is still in existence is because it engages the audience with loads of content areas for example news, information, education, inspiration, special offers and entertainment, all of which generate engagement between the reader and the advertised brands. The Independent for example is now just a digital media product because there must have lost a high number of readership figures on print media so it makes it cheaper for them to produce online copies and better for their ABC1 audience as they all usually use the internet.

The BBC is one of the biggest Public service broadcasters as it educates, informs and entertains so it is funded by the government to produce media for a mass audience. They own TV, Radio, Sport, Weather, News and IPlayer so it makes it a cross media ownership. The BBC use synergy to advertise their different platforms so it will show trailers or adverts of something what could be on Radio 4 but on BBC 2 and therefore TV programs what are on BBC2 will then be on iPlayer so if the audience miss it they can catch up on it video on demand therefore they get a higher audience by promoting their products on different platforms.

The Daily Mail are a popular cross media platform company as they own print based newspaper and digital to produce their news on and also own their own Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to get live updates from. The Daily Mail also have their own ‘stories’ section on Snapchat where the news is mainly celebrity gossip to fit snapchats target audience of Teenagers who would usually rather read gossip than worldwide news. You can also subscribe to them on snapchat stories so you will see that first on the story section. On their tweets from Twitter they have the link connecting The Mail online so the audience can click on it to view the whole story. They also have a hyperlink to their Facebook page in their bio so they get more followers therefore a higher readership figure. A good thing about them having social media platforms to promote their top stories on it is people can get a notification when they have posted so they will get their audience reading their publications straight away. The Daily Mail also have their own app on app stores on the computer and mobile phones so they have a wide range of medias to publicise their stories on.

Buzzfeed is an example of a very popular social media based news platform as they have their own website and social medias but no print based products. They focus mostly on gossip and have a range of quizzes on their platforms. Similarly, to The Daily Mail they have their own section on the snapchat ‘Stories’ which usually appears first on the homepage signifying it is very popular. They cover celebrity gossip on there, hacks and interesting facts and screenshots to send you friends about “Who their next famous boyfriend will be”. Most articles on their snapchat stories are aimed at girls as they must have a higher readership figure with females.

The press owned by a conglomerate is very different to the Huffington Post for example as they mainly focus on US politics as they are a politically liberal online news aggregator however press owned by a conglomerate usually cover a wide range of opinions and are politically biased.
